A Day In The Life – Blood Exchange

A Day In The Life Of A Sickler:

We spent the day at University College London Hospital with a 24 year old sickle cell anaemia patient having a blood exchange.

A blood exchange / exchange transfusion involves slowly removing the person’s blood and replacing it with fresh donor blood.

This particular patient has to travel from Birmingham to London every 4 weeks to have this procedure done in order to manage her sickle cell. Time off work and no expenses paid, but she has to do this in order to stay well.
