My Friend Jen Celebrates the Success of the first Progression of Sickle Cell Gala in Birmingham
In honour of World Sickle Cell Day 2023, My Friend Jen’s extraordinary gala event captivated guests from across the United Kingdom. On Saturday 10th June, The Progression of Sickle Cell Gala took place, in celebration of the indomitable spirit of individuals living with sickle cell disease, raising awareness about the condition, and fostering a sense of unity in the fight against this genetic blood disorder.
World Sickle Cell Day is observed annually on 19th June. It serves as a global platform to bring attention to sickle cell disease, its impact on individuals and families, and the urgent need for increased support, research, and advocacy. To celebrate this year’s theme “Power in Unity, Power in Numbers. Working together to save lives.”, the Progression if Sickle Cell gala event promised to be magnificent. This first of its kind event to take place in Birmingham was a gathering of community leaders, healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical representatives, philanthropists, and individuals affected by sickle cell disease, all rallying together to celebrate each other.
Honouring those who have contributed to the progression of sickle cell
The evening’s program was a seamless blend of inspiration, education, and entertainment. Hosted by comedian, broadcaster, creator and activist David Whitely, the focus was a presentation and honours ceremony delivered by director and creator of My Friend Jen, Jenica Leah. The evening shed light on the challenges faced by those living with sickle cell disease and celebrated the advancements being made in its management and treatment; despite the disparities sickle cell faces in comparison to other, less common diseases.
There were 9 honour categories in total; Media & Journalism, Charities, Content Creators, Advocates, Blood Donation, Change Makers, Influencers, Science & Tech and Patient Engagement. Jenica Leah honoured the winners from each category with heart-felt praises that left most of the room teary eyed.

Key Take Aways
The Gala brought together individuals from all walks of life. It bridged the gap between patients, caregivers, medical professionals, researchers, and philanthropic organizations. By fostering collaboration and raising awareness, it is fair to say that everyone in the room left knowing more about sickle cell. Because of this, the Gala was definitely a huge success.
There I was, surrounded by remarkable black individuals from various sectors, all sharing heart-rending stories that will stay with me. Listening to those living with sickle cell recount their experiences was a powerful wake-up call.
Though I’ve known people with sickle cell, I was struck by my own ignorance about the depth of their battles. Their courage and resilience shook me. From this newfound understanding comes a clear purpose: I must, and will, do more.
An emotional evening with too many stories of the support needed just not being available. With some amazing stories of how far individuals have come by not letting this disease define them.
A couple of standout moments: – In the time there have been over 30 iPhone releases, there have ONLY been 6 new developments for treating this disease. – Some with Sickle Cell may require a blood transfusion every 4 weeks! 4 WEEKS!!! There are still not enough blood donors from the black community. We need to start this conversation. More needs to be done! SEA by My Friend Jen CIC is doing amazing work, educating, and raising awareness. We’ll continue our support for Sickle Cell.
The My Friend Jen Team have already began preparations for The Progression of Sickle Cell 2024. It will take place on Saturday 29th June at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. In addition to the Gala event, next years event will also include an education and awareness conference during the day.
